Chapter 14

Baron

All I could think about was getting home to my little bird. The light of my life. Leaving her was more difficult than anything I’ve ever done. Business took me away. A necessity I cursed every hour I was gone.

Once I got home, my thoughts were only of Hailey. Then Tanya somehow managed to slip past security and make it to the front door. Her blatant offering of her body made me sick to my stomach.

The sound of shattering glass startled Tanya. It aided me in the quest to remove her clinging arms from around my neck.

Vito appeared at the top of the stairs. His face was devoid of emotion. “You’re urgently needed,” he called with a glance toward the west wing.

My wrath spewed toward its intended target. “Get out now, Tanya. If you ever cross my path or interfere in my life again, I will end you myself.”

For once, Tanya knew I was serious. A few members of my security team arrived just in time to escort her from the grounds.

My attention turned to Vito and the mess I was certain awaited me. Just as I suspected, it was worse than I could imagine. A broken plate. The remains of peanut butter cookies. Only Hailey knew my favorite cookies. I knew without being told that she saw Tanya latched onto me. She assumed the worst.

Vito confirmed my suspicions. “She ran to the west wing. The panel concealing the passage is open. It appears she used the secret passageway to escape. I have a team searching for her trail now.”

Maria appeared when I approached the west wing. “Mr. Michaels, little bird fly away.”

There was no consoling me in the hours that followed. Security teams searched every inch of the city. Nearby towns held no clues. No sign of my precious mate.

I could not sleep or eat. Pacing the floors did no good. The second night Hailey was gone, I took matters into my own hands. Why not use my ability to detect Hailey’s scent to guide the search? Dressed in military-style fatigues and hiking boots, I took Vito and a few other men with me. Wild hogs and jaguar roamed the forested areas of the island. The thought of my mate defending herself with bare hands brought a wave of nausea to twist my gut. I would find her.

The garage on the western end of my property was our starting point. Vito and the men remained behind me. Their lights shone around us to illuminate the ground. We walked for over an hour before the first faint remains of her scent found my nostrils. Sweet. Arousing. Mine.

The wind shifted when my path turned toward the hilly terrain on the northern edge of the island. A stronger wave of scent filled flaring nostrils. Ocean waves crashed in the distance. I stood atop a hill, closed my eyes and tilted my head. Turning my head this way and that way, testing the wind. A stronger wave of Hailey’s scent teased my senses.
